A man died after he was trapped underneath an SUV in the San Fernando Valley Saturday morning, authorities say.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the 911 call regarding the incident was received at 10:50 a.m.

When first responders arrived at the scene – near the intersection of Vanowen Street and Owensmouth Avenue in Canoga Park – they located the man trapped under the axle of an SUV, LAFD said.

Firefighters quickly extricated the man, said to be approximately 40 years old, but he was beyond medical help and died at the scene.

Video posted to the Citizen App shows the man’s legs beneath the white Kia, which was trying to make a right turn out of a mall parking lot onto Owensmouth, according to LAPD Sgt. Vostad. The driver was only identified as a 17-year-old boy.

The man was riding a scooter on the sidewalk at the time of the collision, Sgt. Vostad elaborated, adding that he was wearing a helmet.

“The victim collided with the ground and slid under the car, and then the car drove over him,” he said.

The victim has not been formally identified.
